183 Sow Location Within Farrowing Room Impacts Reproduction During Heat Stress

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the impact of sow location, within farrowing room, on reproduction during periods heat stress. Data were collected 1,866 sows at a 3,600-sow commercial farm in eastern North Carolina from May August 2021. In buildings, evaporative cool cell pads cooled air entering hallway. Cooled air, hallway, then entered rooms through inlets front room and pulled by fans back room. For data analysis, each divided into four zones. Zone 1 included near letting air. 4 where exited building embedded wall. Zones 2 3 intermediate. Each housed between 18 36 sows. After farrowing, had ad libitum access lactation diet. Traits piglet survival (number weaned ÷ total number born) percentage conceiving 7 days after weaning, subsequent born, born alive, stillborns, caliper score prefarrow, weaning loss. Results are shown Table 1. Piglet greater (P < 0.05) for that farrowed inlets. Similarly, litter weight heavier relative part conceived farrowed, linearly associated with zone. Sows lost less body condition more piglets showed condition, survival, weights likely be rebred conceive
